See an article (CAASP Process Oct 2015) recently published in the IPU Review by Matthew Lynch (RCSI) outlining the CAASP process for recruiting interns in 2016/17. 2015/16 has seen the highest number of industry intern placements yet with 17 placements in 9 industry sites plus 4 in the HPRA. Interest in industry careers has increased in recent years. PIER can probably take some credit for this as the committee has focused a lot of its efforts into career events (four organised over past 2.5 years with another planned in RCSI on 26th Nov 2015) to raise awareness among students and recently qualified of the many roles a pharmacist can hold in industry. Intern and summer placements are an important way for students to gain some insights into a career in industry. If any industry based pharmacist would be in position to offer intern placement(s) in 2016/17 or even 2017/18, please contact PIER ( or Darragh Scannell in RCSI (

•             Guidance on communicating with a teen audience – handling tricky questions!

•             Best practice relating to child protection

•             Overview of Smart Futures resources to help book/carry out your school visit

Why volunteer?

•             Raise awareness of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) career paths

•             Support and inspire young people in your local area – future proof the STEM graduate pipeline

•             Develop your communication skills

•             Improve awareness of your organisation in the community.

During the procedure, David induced ventricular fibrillation and, provided the device has been set up correctly, the patient gets a 900V shock from the implant through leads connected to the heart.
